The photos captured the seemingly happy day, as they toasted to the wedding, embraced, and she danced to the accompaniment of his guitar. But behind these photos, something disturbing and horrifying is happening.

Both of her children have been missing for two months. His wife of 30 years – a mother of five – died suddenly two weeks ago.

Not long ago, her husband was shot and killed by her brother. Later, her brother also died mysteriously.

In the four years since the November 2019 wedding of Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell, a deeply disturbing story has emerged that includes alleged murder, Unexplained deaths and apocalyptic cult beliefs about killing zombies.

A total of five people close to the couple died.

Now, Vallow, who has been dubbed a “cult mom,” is finally brought to justice.

On May 12, 2023, Vallow was sentenced to death for the deaths of his 16-year-old daughter, Tylee Ryan, and his 7-year-old son, Joshua “JJ” Vallow. First-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and grand larceny. She was also found guilty of conspiring to kill Daybell’s first wife, Tammy.

On July 31, Vallow was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for these crimes. Now, Daybell is also on trial for murder.

Vallow also faces charges in Arizona of murdering her fourth husband, Charles Vallow.

JJ was last seen at school in Rexburg a few days later, on September 22, and his mother’s friend met him at her apartment that night. The next morning, the 7-year-old child with autism disappeared.

When asked where he was, Vallow told friends Melanie Gibb and David Warwick that he had to be taken away because he was “like a zombie.”

Cellphone data showed Vallow’s brother, Alex Cox, was in the Daybell’s yard in the hours after the two children disappeared. The morning after Taylor was last seen, Daybell also sent his wife a text message saying he had shot a raccoon and buried it in their family’s pet cemetery.

It would be months before investigators – and the children’s desperate families – learned what had happened to the two children.

JJ’s grandparents called police after being unable to contact their grandson, but Vallow refused to tell police the whereabouts of the two children.

According to friends of Vallow, she once claimed that her children were “zombies” and that “the only way to free a person’s soul from evil zombies is to kill them.”

In June 2020, when the remains of JJ and Tyler were found buried in the Daybell family’s backyard, the children’s families’ worst fears became reality.

JJ’s body was placed in a black plastic bag wrapped in duct tape, while Taylor’s body was dismembered and burned in a fire pit before being buried in a pet cemetery.

The children’s disappearance and deaths unveil a series of other mysterious deaths linked to the apocalyptic couple, revealing the truth behind the sudden deaths of people close to the couple.

Before the search for JJ and Taylor gained national attention, there appeared to be no connection.

Instead, the two deaths, now allegedly murdered by a doomsday cult couple, were once thought to be self-defense or even natural causes.

The Death of Charles Vallow: Self-Defense or Murder?

Two months earlier, Vallow’s brother, Alex Cox, shot and killed Vallow’s then-husband, Charles Vallow, as prosecutors said Vallow and Daybell murdered JJ and Taylor. ). It was the morning of July 11, 2019, and Charles went to pick up JJ from his estranged wife’s home in Chandler, Arizona.

Charles and Vallow married in 2006 and adopted JJ, the biological grandson of Vallow’s sister.

Cox claimed Charles attacked him with a baseball bat, so he fired in self-defense.

Police interviews with Taylor, 16, and a smiling Vallow gave similar versions of events.

However, after the attack, Cox did not perform CPR on Charles, but waited 43 minutes before calling the police. Investigators said Charles was already on the ground when Cox shot him a second time.

A few months before Charles died, he filed for divorce from Vallow, saying he feared for his and his children’s safety because Vallow had threatened to kill him.

In February, he asked authorities for mental health intervention for his wife, warning that she believed he was a god preparing for his second coming.

Court documents show that Charles learned of Vallow’s relationship with Daybell in June and emailed the information to Tammy. At the time of his death, he and another of Vallow’s brothers were planning an intervention against her cult – which she is believed to have been tipped off to.

When Charles was shot and killed, the case was ruled self-defense. After Charles’ death, Vallow became a free man, but Daybell continued to be married for a while.

Tammy Daybell dies in her sleep

Daybell married his first wife, Tammy, in 1990, and they had five children. They also founded a publishing company together – which published his book about the end of the world.

Just one month after the children disappeared, on October 19, 2019, the originally healthy 49-year-old Tammy suddenly died in her sleep.

Strangely, just 10 days ago, she called 911 to report that someone was shooting at her with a paintball gun in her driveway.

Despite the mysterious circumstances, her husband refused an autopsy and her death was ruled natural.

It was not until the two children were reported missing that police began to investigate Vallow and Daybell, whose sudden remarriage and strange cult beliefs raised questions about Tammy’s death.

Investigators exhumed her body for an autopsy in December 2020 and found that she “died at the hands of others and died of suffocation.”

The deaths didn’t end there.

In December 2019, Alex Cox also died suddenly at the age of 51. At that time, police asked Vallow to hand over her children.

One day, Cox was found gasping for breath on the bathroom floor of the home he lived with his wife, Zulema Pastenes, whom he had married just two weeks before.

An autopsy found a blood clot in an artery in his lungs and his death was ruled a natural cause. However, medical examiners found an overdose of the drug naloxone in his system.

In the days before his death, Pastens said he had hinted that his death was imminent.

“Just a day or two before he died, he said to me, ‘If anything happens to me, I want you to know that there’s money in a bag in the closet that’s for you,'” she told police, court records show. It’s not much, but it’s for you.'”

On the day of his death, he allegedly called Daybell to get a “blessing” over the phone.

His death was not suspected.

Doomsday cult worship spawns tragedy

The couple’s bizarre apocalyptic cult is at the center of a series of murders and mysterious deaths.

Daybell runs a publishing company that publishes books based on the theology of the Church of Latter-day Saints, loosely telling the story of the end of the world.

Vallow had been following his book for some time before the two finally met at a religious conference in Utah in October 2018.

At that point, investigators say, their relationship became ambiguous. As their relationship grows closer, their apocalyptic beliefs grow stronger.

Vallow claimed in her divorce papers that she believed she was a god-like figure chosen to work with 144,000 believers.

Multiple friends quoted in the police report said the couple believed they could exorcise evil spirits and seek enlightenment from “beyond the spiritual veil.”

Documents show that Vallow even believed she could teleport between Arizona and Hawaii. But the most chilling part is that the couple allegedly believed people, including JJ and Taylor, had been turned into “zombies.”

It is said that they have a scoring system to measure the degree of good to evil in people’s souls.

According to the documents, they believed the only way to rid a person of zombies was to let them die.

Prosecutors believe Vallow and Daybell used these beliefs to further their plot to kill JJ, Terri and Tammy.

Killer faces murder charges

In May 2021, nearly a year after Taylor and JJ’s bodies were found, Vallow and Daybell were charged with murder.

Prosecutors said the couple conspired with Cox to kill the children and Daybell’s wife, both as part of their apocalyptic beliefs and to defraud life insurance money, the children’s Social Security and survivor benefits.

“All of these overt actions were intended so that Vallow and Daybell could ultimately be together and complete their mission on Earth,” an investigative report said. “This belief system, desire and greed also led to the development of Tyler Ray’s The Deaths of Well, J.J. Vallow and Tammy Daybell.”

In Arizona, Vallow is also accused of conspiring with Cox to murder her ex-husband, Charles Vallow.

The Maricopa County Prosecutor’s Office announced they would not charge Daybell with Charles’ murder simply because there was “no reasonable prospect of conviction.”

Life imprisonment and possible death sentence

The trial of the doomsday cult couple has been stalled over the past few years, in part due to the coronavirus pandemic, insanity and legal disputes.

Vallow has been behind bars since January 2020, when she was arrested in Hawaii and extradited to Idaho for failing to comply with a court order to turn her children over to authorities.

Daybell has been in jail since June 2020, when the children’s remains were discovered.

The case was dropped when Vallow was found to be mentally incompetent to stand trial. She subsequently stayed in a mental health facility for nearly a year until she was found competent to stand trial in May 2022, and the case went through the courts.

The two cases were subsequently heard separately, and Vallow’s death sentence was vacated, but Daybell’s possible death sentence was not involved.

Vallow eventually went to trial in April 2023 and was found guilty of all counts of killing his children and conspiring to kill Tammy. She will spend the rest of her life in prison.

Daybell is also now going to court. Jury selection for his trial begins on April 1. If convicted, he faces the death penalty.

His attorney, John Prior, had filed a motion to have the death penalty thrown out, but Judge Boyce denied the request.
