What are Taiwan’s top ten star species? Taipower delivers beautiful results in 2024! Eight major power plants demonstrate ecological conservation achievements – VERSE

--

Taiwan Electric Power Company recently held a 2024 Environment Month press conference, with the theme “Seeing the Beauty of Taiwan Power Ecology”. Looking back at Taipower’s 2023 environmental report card, compared with 2016, the air pollution emission intensity of its own thermal power units has been reduced by nearly 70%, while the carbon emission intensity has also been reduced by 8%, which is a fruitful result.

Taipower stated that the pursuit of environmental sustainability is a global consensus. Taipower continues to upgrade environmental protection equipment of its units, launches a low-carbon gas unit renewal plan, actively promotes carbon capture and hydrogen and ammonia co-firing power generation, and gradually implements net-zero electricity; Taipower also responds to international In the spirit of OECM (Other Effective Protected Areas), we are committed to creating ecological integration in power construction, maintaining species diversity and environmental ecology, and hope that every power field will be operated towards the OECM concept.

This year, Taipower also took inventory of hundreds of power sites across Taiwan and launched eight major power plants and ten star species ecological maps to show the results of Taipower’s long-term investment in ecological conservation, including Concord Power Plant (Coral), Zhuolan Power Plant (Purple Spotted Butterfly), Dajia Xi Power Plant (Lead-colored Water Thrush and Taiwanese Stonebird), Wanda Power Plant (Wushe Blood-spotted Beetle and Taiwanese Soybean), Taixi Wind Farm (East Asian House Bat), Xingda Power Plant (Black-faced Spoonbill), and the Third Nuclear Power Plant (gar) and Jianshan Power Plant (water chestnut).

Last year, Taipower launched the documentary “Bird Power Plant” on the Yongan Wetland ecology of Kaohsiung Xingda Power Plant, which won seven awards including the 2024 U.S. Global Film Competition “Excellence Award in the Natural and Wild Environment Category” and the National Short Film Competition. This year, Taipower once again teamed up with director Hsu Hong-long to shoot “Bat” “Relocation Plan” ecological documentary, which completely records the bat relocation plan of Xifeng Farm of Taiwan Radio Station.

Taipower stated that the Yunlin Taixi Wind Farm plans to install four wind turbines, which can supply the annual electricity consumption of nearly 6,000 households each year, while also bringing more than 10,000 tons of carbon reduction benefits. It is expected to be completed in August 2025. Investigations at the early stage of planning revealed that the local area has a rich bat ecology. In order to balance power development and maintenance of biodiversity, the “Bat Habitat Relocation Project” was launched in 2020, and the largest bat research in Taiwan was launched. Through habitat compensation, Guide bats to migrate to new habitats on the south side of the wind farm.

Taipower stated that it first set up 100 bat nest boxes around the wind farm and tracked them regularly every month through individual tags. So far, more than 1,700 bat nest boxes have been used, and the “occupancy rate” is as high as 95%. In March this year, 70 more nest boxes were added to the windbreaks and electric poles on the south side of the wind farm to allow the bats to move to their new homes smoothly. In addition, the site preparation of the project was carried out in sections to avoid the bat breeding season, and a real-time sensing system was installed. If a large number of bats or birds are detected during the operation of the wind turbine in the future, the load can be reduced or shut down remotely, taking into account stable power supply and the environment. ecology.

Taipower will also hold “Special Lectures on Low-Carbon Transformation of Thermal Power Plants”, “Bicycle Low-carbon Tour around the Island”, “Centennial Hydropower and Geothermal Exploration Tour”, “Wood Cross Arm Regeneration Experience Camp” and A series of activities such as the “Green Energy Ecological Park Tour” invite everyone to contribute energy to environmental sustainability.
