At least four people have died after heavy rains in southern China’s Guangdong caused flooding in the manufacturing heartland and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate, according to a revised death toll on Monday.

Since Thursday, heavy rains have battered Guangdong, China’s most populous province (127 million inhabitants) and a symbol of China’s manufacturing powerhouse, home to tens of thousands of export-oriented factories and the provincial capital Guangzhou.

Chinese rescue workers continued to evacuate residents trapped by floods in Guangdong province on Monday after heavy rains over the weekend.

On Sunday ahead of yet another spell of severe weather, local authorities warned that rainfall was causing rivers to swell, raising fears of a “flood of the century”.

China’s Xinhua news agency reported late on Monday that “four people have died and 10 others are missing” in the past few days, citing the agency that monitors emergencies. A report earlier this afternoon put the death toll at three and 11 missing.

Heavy rainfall is not uncommon in southern China, especially in the summer, but it’s early in the spring. China has been experiencing extreme weather conditions in recent months, which are exacerbated by global climate change, according to scientists.

These scientists point out that climate change caused by man-made greenhouse gases is making extreme weather events more frequent and severe.

Heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, is expected on Monday in Shenzhen, home to many technology companies and bordering Hong Kong, according to the China Meteorological Administration.

According to China News Network, more than 100,000 people in Guangdong have had to be relocated in the past few days.

Qingyuan is about 60 kilometers away from Guangzhou. Beijiang, a tributary of the Pearl River Delta, flows through Qingyuan. Some people have been evacuated from Qingyuan.

Reuters said residents of Qingyuan, a city located north of the provincial capital Guangzhou with a population of about 4 million, said the flooding this weekend was not as severe as in 2022, but they were worried. Beijiang, a tributary of the Pearl River that flows through Qingyuan, overflowed over the weekend, inundating homes and shops.

“We are worried that the flooding will be worse than two years ago,” said Song Xiaowei, who works at a parts factory. “I have friends in Jintan Town and they have moved furniture. The village opposite has been flooded to the first floor.”

Elsewhere, bad weather over the past few days caused landslides in mountainous areas, AFP quoted CCTV as saying. Six people were injured and several others were trapped near Jiangwan Town in northern Guangdong. Footage broadcast by CCTV showed houses on the river bank destroyed by mudslides and people being rescued from muddy sports fields.

The meteorological department warned that provinces bordering Guangdong, especially Fujian (east) and Guizhou (southwest), will also be affected by heavy rainfall.
