UMC said that since the Green Award has been held for eight consecutive years, about 40 species have been conserved in Taiwan’s land, sea, air and other fields, from protecting the endangered Taiwanese whitefish and Taiwanese pangolin to supporting the restoration of coral habitats in Penghu, etc. By working together with Green Award-winning groups, we hope to awaken humankind’s attention to other species on the earth and do our part to protect Taiwan’s unique biodiversity.

Jian Shanjie, Co-General Manager and Chief Sustainability Officer of UMC, said that due to the impact of climate warming, the world is facing unprecedented threats of species extinction and loss of biodiversity. At this critical moment, conservation actions have become increasingly urgent. UMC has been actively investing in green manufacturing for a long time. While reducing carbon emissions, it is also concerned about the impact of climate change on biodiversity. Through the Green Award Program, environmental groups and the general public are promoted and encouraged to take actions to ensure the sustainable development of Taiwan’s ecological environment.

According to past statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture, more than 100 species of vertebrates and nearly a thousand species of plants are on the verge of extinction in Taiwan, and many species are gradually disappearing. As of 2023, the Green Award has supported 68 cross-industry and cross-regional environmental solutions across Taiwan, such as assisting Puli Yixin Community to promote the cultivation of pesticide-free wild rice bamboo shoots, allowing Taiwanese whitefish to regenerate in clean water quality, and The local ecology and economy have reached a balance; in response to the large-scale coral bleaching caused by rising seawater temperatures, the Green Award has supported Penghu’s coral restoration project for three consecutive years, hoping to restore coral habitats, maintain biodiversity, and let the inland sea Ecology can develop sustainably.

UMC launched the Green Award in 2016, offering a total bonus of NT$4 million to openly solicit high-quality ecological conservation and green innovation projects. It is the award that provides the highest bonus for ecological conservation in China. Among them, the “Ecological Conservation Award” aims to promote environmental biodiversity and species restoration, and is divided into large-scale ecological conservation projects and youth environmental action awards; the “Green Innovation Award” solicits innovative solutions to climate change and circular economy , combining the creativity and technology of the new entrepreneurial team to connect new possibilities for low-carbon sustainability.

UMC stated that the 9th Green Award invited eight corporate partners to join hands, including 3M, Tokyo Weili Technology, Hanmin Technology, Hanko Systems, Faraday Technology, Taiyo Nippon Sanso, Chiyang, and Xinxing Electronics, to gather semiconductor supply Let’s work together to support and respond to biodiversity. The Green Award application period is open from now until August 31.
