April is the most beautiful day in the world, and the fragrance of books can bring you far. On April 21, the 2024 National Reading Theme Promotion in Jiangsu Province and the launching event of Wuxi’s 17th Taihu Reading Month were held at the Wuxi International Conference Center. In 2024, Jiangsu Province’s national reading theme promotion will hold 139 key activities such as theme reading, key group reading, and classified reading promotion, striving to provide readers with wide coverage, precision, and high-quality reading services.

“In-depth reading” and “parent-child reading” account for a high proportion

Since last year, actions to promote reading among all people and build a scholarly society have become common practice in Jiangsu. The construction of “Bookish Jiangsu” has achieved new progress and new results: the 19th Jiangsu Reading Festival launch event was held innovatively, and the “9·28” cross-provincial linkage was held for the first time. Classic reading activities were held, and the provincial “Reading for All Spring Breeze Action” home event was organized. The number of online and offline participants at the main exhibition venue of the 13th Jiangsu Book Fair in Suzhou reached a record high.

The results of a survey on the reading status of residents in Jiangsu Province recently released show that the comprehensive reading rate of residents in the province in 2023 is 90.34%, an increase of 0.01 percentage points from 2022. Reading has become a daily habit of more residents. The average reading time per person per day is 71.93 minutes, and 62.62% of the residents surveyed read for more than one hour a day. “In-depth reading” has become the mainstream. It is worth noting that a survey of 15,169 respondents with children under 8 years old at home showed that 88.97% of the respondents or their family members had the habit of reading with their children, indicating that “little hands holding big hands” parent-child cooperation in our province The construction of reading and “bookish family” has achieved results.

The relevant person in charge of the National Reading Division of the Provincial Party Committee Propaganda Department said that overall, the construction of “Bookish Jiangsu” has shown a good situation of innovative advancement and vigorous development. Jiangsu’s national reading work in 2024 will focus on deepening thematic reading promotion activities and improving public reading. Systematic advancement has been made in terms of service efficiency and innovative reading promotion content and forms.

Recommend good books every year and enjoy a “book-style” life

In recent years, distinctive reading promotion activities have blossomed across Jiangsu. At the event site, the 2023 provincial-level charity reading promotion activity certification list was announced. 17 projects including the Nanjing City of Literature Literature Course (Nanjing City of Literature Promotion Association) and the activity of reading a book for one million workers in the Yangtze River Delta (5+10) cities (Wuxi Federation of Trade Unions) have obtained provincial first-class certification.

Reading good books together nourishes the heart with the fragrance of books. Since 2013, the provincial leading group for national reading activities has recommended 12 good books to readers across the province every year. The “12 good books” recommended this year are: “The Wind Rises in Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia”, “Changes and Responses: Global Economic and Financial Trends and China’s Future”, “Chinese-Style Agricultural and Rural Modernization”, “New Productivity”, “Water Moisturizing the Great Yangtze River in China” “General Course on Dunhuang Art” “Listen to the Chief Expert’s Talk about the Project to Explore the Origin of Chinese Civilization” “Pao Pu” “ChatGPT Era: The Coming New Wave of Artificial Intelligence” “Promote Health and Enjoy Old Age” “Youth Science That Will Be Addicted at First Reading Lesson” “Lighting Sound”.

Nowadays, the reading methods of Jiangsu people are gradually changing, and the amount of traditional paper reading has decreased. In 2023, the reading rate of paper books was 65.06%, a decrease of 3.63 percentage points from 2022. “Online reading” accounts for 71.55% of the main ways residents read. In this regard, Lu Yuan, director of the Jiangsu Provincial National Reading Promotion Association and co-founder of Qunxue Academy, believes that in a modern society with diversified reading forms, finding the most suitable reading method for oneself is as long as the original intention of acquiring knowledge, broadening horizons, and improving wisdom is not changed. , any form of reading can be eclectic for my use.

Exciting activities lead a new trend in reading

Live up to the spring scenery and “walk with the book”. At present, national reading activities such as the second Jiangsu University Phoenix Reading Festival, “Reading without Borders and Reading in Jinling – 2024 National Reading Charity Tour”, “Yanshang Shuxiang·Wang Dong Reading Month” are being held in various places across the province. At the event site, 139 key national reading activities in Jiangsu Province in 2024 were officially released, which will further stimulate the national reading enthusiasm.

Public reading service survey data show that 93.59% of residents in the province were “satisfied” with reading activities in 2023, an increase of 1.85 percentage points from the previous year. This result makes Zhou Lejin, the head of Yixing Huiren Book Club, who has been promoting charity reading for 11 consecutive years, very excited. Since the beginning of this year, he has held five consecutive reading events for “Takeaway Poet” Wang Jibing, which has created a good communication effect. “The Huiren Book Club will always use good books to ‘Huiren’. We hope that through our activities, more people will feel the power of literature and the power of reading.” Zhou Lejin said.

The 17th Taihu Reading Month in Wuxi City has been launched simultaneously, and more than 2,500 reading activities will be held one after another. Over the years, Wuxi has attached great importance to reading for all, and has focused on the “Taihu Reading Month” activity. It has a theme every year and innovations every year. As of 2023, it has covered more than 70 million online and offline people.
