Wang Meihua: Taiwan can learn from Japan’s hydrogen energy development and semiconductor cooperation to write a new page | Financial Focus | Industrial Economics

--

Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Meihua attended the Sino-Japanese Engineering Technology Seminar today and said that hydrogen energy is an area in which Taiwan very much hopes to cooperate with Japan, and it can learn from Japan’s experience in the construction of hydrogen energy receiving stations. In addition, TSMC’s successful establishment of a factory in Japan has also improved Taiwan-Japan relations. Write a new chapter in cooperation in the semiconductor industry.

The 34th China-Japan Engineering Technology Symposium kicked off today. The four-day symposium focused on three major aspects: net-zero carbon emissions, sustainable operations, and engineering carbon reduction. Executive Yuan Vice President Zheng Wencan, Economic Minister Wang Meihua, and CNPC Chairman Li Shunqin and others attended the opening ceremony.

Cheng Wen-can said in his speech that the theme of this year’s seminar has been expanded to 17 professional groups. It is an important exchange meeting between Taiwan and Japan in engineering technology. In addition to energy and environment, the theme also covers new technologies such as semiconductors, 5G and AI. For the first time, China National Petroleum Corp. and China Steel Corporation were invited. Companies such as , Chunghwa Telecom and Chongyue Technology joined.

In her speech, Wang Meihua said that many major infrastructure projects in Taiwan have been closely cooperating with Japan, including the introduction of relevant engineering technologies in 5G detection, new AI applications, etc. This year’s seminar added new topics such as net zero and sustainability. Net zero covers a wide range of topics and is also a difficult task.

She said that because there are many small and medium-sized enterprises in Taiwan, most of their products are export-oriented, and the enterprises are facing international and transformation pressures, but they have encountered three challenges in the actual implementation of transformation, including understanding how to implement it, the price to be paid, and cost considerations.

For the net-zero transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises, Wang Meihua pointed out that the Ministry of Economic Affairs has organized guidance groups to assist various industries and cooperate with public associations to teach companies how to conduct carbon inventories and improve manufacturing processes.

In terms of net-zero technology research and development, Wang Meihua said that hydrogen energy is an area in which Taiwan very much hopes to cooperate with Japan. During her visit to Kobe, Japan, she visited facilities such as hydrogen ships and receiving stations that have been built. Japan’s experience is worth learning from Taiwan. Therefore, she also gave CNPC a great responsibility and hoped that CNPC would become the leader in the development of hydrogen energy in Taiwan.

Talking about Taiwan-Japan semiconductor industry cooperation, Wang Meihua said that she went to Japan to participate in the Taiwan Image Exhibition and Semiconductor Forum. Semiconductors are one of the hottest topics in Taiwan and Japan now. Observing the progress of TSMC’s international layout and factory construction, the Kumamoto factory was the earliest to be completed and the fastest to mass-produce. This was mainly due to the support of Japanese central and local officials at all levels, and the similarity in talent background and work culture between Taiwan and Japan. Taiwan-Japan cooperation has also followed the semiconductor cooperation. , and set off another wave of new developments.

Wang Meihua said that Japanese material technology is the best in the world, and Japanese material manufacturers are very similar to Taiwanese companies. In addition to major international manufacturers, there are also many small and medium-sized hidden champions. The Ministry of Economic Affairs has recently been actively courting Japanese companies. Because Taiwan is the world’s most advanced manufacturing process and R&D center, material manufacturers investing in Taiwan can also participate in the R&D process to create win-win results.

Regarding next year’s GDP growth, Wang Meihua said in an interview before the meeting that next year’s economic cycle will increase, coupled with the development of AI and other technologies, it will help increase Taiwan’s GDP growth. “Taiwan’s GDP has a very high chance of growing by 3%.” However, the biggest variables currently include As the Russia-Ukraine war continues, and whether the Israel-Kazakhstan war will have spillover effects, we need to be cautious in the future.
