Even though it’s only been out for about six months, Blizzard is already ready to launch Diablo IV’s first expansion pack. Vessel of Hatred is set to release sometime next year, but we already know some very exciting details, including the return of iconic villain Mephisto. Diablo II fans will remember Mephisto, but if you’re new to the series, you might be wondering who this Prime Evil is.

In short, MurphyStowe isPrime Evil. Mephisto is the first of the Seven Evils and is the father of Lilith, making him the grandfather of Sanctuary. He has manipulated much of the Diablo universe, and although he discovered the Sanctuary after it was created, ever since it appeared on his radar – and the humans within it – he has been looking to devour all available souls to strengthen himself and ultimately win The great war with heaven.

However, Mephisto is not allowed to cause the chaos he likes in the Sanctuary. He was imprisoned in the Soul Stone along with his brothers Diablo and Baal, but over time his powers began to leak out, allowing him to exert his influence again. In the first three Diablo games, Mephisto took control of the entire faith, trying to get his agents to open the soul stone that trapped his brother, and his own soul stone was broken, eventually becoming trapped in the black soul stone, and then being Sent back to hell.

But now he’s back. Or at least, he’s in another soul stone. How he got into that stone has not yet been revealed, but that, along with the rest of his story, will be revealed in time. In the first act of the Diablo IV campaign, you can find Mephisto as a wolf following you around and even explaining you from time to time. Even though his daughter Lilith is the main antagonist of the game, he seems unwilling to illustrate her, preferring to see her defeated, which is why he illustrates the player. He is too weak to bear her alone, but hopes to guide a brave human to end her.

Mephisto’s return will also bring a journey back to Graast, an area explored in Diablo II. Even though the Lord of Hatred is once again trapped in the Soul Stone, it seems Mephisto won’t sit still. As we know, he previously destroyed entire faiths in the comfort of the Soul Stone, so the next chapter in the Diablo IV story could see the return of an angry Prime Evil. Although he has helped us in the past, it was only to further his own goals of preventing his daughter from usurping his power. So don’t go into the Vessel of Hatred expecting to be paired with Prime Evil.

By returning a character like Mephisto, this could be a sign that his brothers could be back in other expansions for Diablo IV.As production director Tiffany Wat said during a group interview at BlizzCon“Those chief evils are nasty. We’re unlikely to see them completely destroyed, and the same goes for Lilith. Even though we defeated her in the base game, with Mephisto entering the DLC, it’s possible to explore the serious father-daughter issues that will arise as we learn more about the Lord of Hatred in Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred.
