Hong Kong has always been a symbol of liberalism in the past, but in recent years it has been strongly suppressed by the Beijing authorities. After the implementation of the National Security Law in June 2020, the freedom of speech in Hong Kong has been more comprehensively strangled. Many people speculate that Taiwan may be China’s next target.

Wu Zhaoxie said that Russia invaded Ukraine in February this year, and Beijing launched a large-scale naval and air drill in August under the pretext of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. More people are concerned that the chance of China’s invasion of Taiwan has greatly increased.

Wu Zhaoxie listed countries that clearly expressed their support for Taiwan, including the close cooperation between Taiwan and Japan on issues such as countering disinformation, maritime security, and natural disaster prevention. Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss said that NATO and the European Union should ensure that Taiwan has defense capabilities Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Lithuania and other countries have all expressed their firm support for Taiwan. The summits of NATO and the Group of Seven (G7) and the French government have all emphasized their concern for the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.

Wu Zhaoxie said that he believed that through the above-mentioned common concerns and specific cooperation of the international community, China’s attempt to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait should be curbed, and peace in the Taiwan Strait and freedom, openness, security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region should be maintained.

Regarding Taiwan’s relations with allied countries and the United States, Wu Zhaoxie emphasized that allies should speak out for Taiwan on international occasions such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and expand international existence for Taiwan. Space is of the essence, and Taiwan is grateful.

As for Taiwan-US relations, Wu Zhaoxie said that Taiwan and the United States cooperate closely in many fields, including information exchange, weapons procurement, personnel training and other security areas. However, regardless of whether the United States sends troops to Taiwan or not, it is Taiwan’s own responsibility to defend the country. , Taiwan will be fully prepared to deal with possible wars.

Wu Zhaoxie also solemnly warned the world that China’s expansion ambitions are not limited to Taiwan, but also attempt to extend its sphere of influence to the Pacific region through the signing of a security agreement with the Solomon Islands, and to expand its authority to Burma, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Djibouti and other Indian Ocean regions, so controlling Taiwan is only the starting point, and Taiwan is the only place through which Beijing’s dictatorship will expand globally.
