On November 6, the track and field events (open group) of the First National Student (Youth) Games ended. The Chengdu Sports Delegation won 8 golds, 4 silvers and 2 bronzes, ranking first among all participating delegations and the first city to participate in the event. The best results in track and field competitions at the National Comprehensive Games, with a total of 17 gold medals won. Among them, 17-year-old sprinter Liu Yinglan won 5 gold medals in 5 days, surpassing Zou Jingyuan’s 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal at the Youth Games, becoming the Chengdu sports delegation’s athlete who has won the most gold medals in a single session so far. What is even more commendable is that the new generation of Sichuan women’s sprint athletes represented by Liu Yinglan, Liu Guoyi and Liu Xiajun are working hard to open another glorious era for Sichuan’s Chinese sprint after the 1997 National Games. Liu Yinglan said: “I will aim at the ‘Asian Flying Star’ Li Xuemei, work hard and achieve great results again!” In addition to track and field, the cycling event has also made a lot of contributions to the Chengdu Sports Delegation. In the competition, the Chengdu Sports Delegation won a total of 4 gold medals, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. The number of gold medals ranked first among the 34 participating teams. This laid a solid foundation for the Chengdu Sports Delegation to surpass history in terms of gold medals. In addition, in the rowing event that they are not good at, the Chengdu Sports delegation also won 3 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronzes. The number of gold medals ranked second only to the Nanjing team. Six contestants were awarded the “Double Gold King”, showing their outstanding performance. It shows the vigorous and upward power of Chengdu men’s rowing.
According to statistics from the Chengdu Municipal Sports Bureau, 903 athletes from the Chengdu Sports Delegation competed in 36 major events and 45 sub-events, winning gold medals in 9 major events including track and field, cycling, rowing, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, and wrestling, and 23 Medals were won in every major event, and weightlifting, wrestling, and judo all achieved the best results in history. Emerging sports such as speed roller skating, roller derby, and rock climbing participated for the first time and achieved outstanding results. It is worth mentioning that the number of gold medals won by the Chengdu sports delegation at this Youth Games is a new high in the past 45 years for a team to participate in the National Comprehensive Games, which is better than Chengdu’s previous best result in the National Comprehensive Games (14 in the Fuzhou Youth Games). The number of gold medals increased by 50%, fully demonstrating that Chengdu is strengthening the integration of sports and education in the process of building a park city demonstration area that implements new development concepts and a “three cities and three capitals”, a world-famous event city, and integrating young reserve sports talents. Training, integrated with the city’s fashion, international, and diversified sports development, has embarked on a path of integrated development of sports and education that is unique to Chengdu and has achieved remarkable results.
