Guangdong issues 44 warnings for once-in-a-century floods

Based on information from mainland media such as CCTV News and China-Singapore Jingwei, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Emergency Management stated that as of 7:00 on April 22, there were 44 early warning signals in Guangdong Province. Among them, 10 heavy rain warnings are issued in some cities and counties in Yangjiang and Maoming. There are 22 thunderstorm and strong wind warnings in some cities and counties in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Yangjiang, and Maoming. There are 10 heavy fog warnings in some cities and counties in Guangzhou, Huizhou, Meizhou, Shaoguan and Zhaoqing. There are 2 high temperature warnings, located in Leizhou City and Xuwen County, Zhanjiang.

The Guangdong Provincial Hydrology Bureau forecast that at 11:00 on April 21, the water level of Lianjiang High Road (Angba), a tributary of the Beijiang River (Xiniu Town, Yingde City, Qingyuan), was 34.83 meters, with a corresponding flow of 7,070 cubic meters per second, exceeding the warning level by 3.33 meters. It is expected that at 1:00 on the 22nd, the peak flow rate at the Gaodao Station will be 9,000 cubic meters per second, “a once-in-100-year event”. The corresponding water level is 37.3 meters, exceeding the warning level by 5.8 meters.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources of China, an obvious flooding process occurred in the Beijiang River Basin. On the evening of the 20th, the flow rate at the Shijiao Hydrological Station on the main stream of the Dongjiang River in Guangdong rose to 12,000 cubic meters per second, and the second flood of 2024 occurred in the Beijiang River. According to forecasts, heavy rainfall will continue in South China in the near future, and severe floods will occur in Beijiang, the Pearl River Basin. The State Administration of Defense of China decided to upgrade the level 4 emergency response to flood control in Guangdong Province to level 3 at 12:00 on April 21.

Chinese state media CCTV reported on the 21st that river sections and tributaries in the Xijiang and Beijiang basins are reaching high water levels, with only a 1 in 50 chance of occurring in any year. Before 12:00 on the 21st, the Guangzhou Railway Department will continue to take measures to suspend and turn back the normal-speed trains passing through Shaoguan on the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, and suspend some normal-speed trains passing through the Beijing-Kowloon Railway. As of 8 a.m. on the 22nd, Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, Shenzhen Baoan Airport, Zhuhai Jinwan Airport, and Huizhou Pingtan Airport have canceled flights in a small area.
