On the 3rd, the 20th Beijing Forum opened at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. More than 600 dignitaries, experts and scholars from 32 countries and regions gathered here to find ways of mutual learning among civilizations and win-win cooperation to jointly address global challenges.

Founded in 2004, the Beijing Forum is an international academic forum hosted by Peking University. It is dedicated to researching global humanities and social science issues, promoting dialogue and cooperation among civilizations, and promoting academic development and social progress. Over the past 20 years, more than 7,000 political figures, experts and scholars from more than 80 countries and regions have participated in this forum.
The theme of this forum is “Harmony and Common Prosperity of Civilizations – Inheritance and Mutual Learning”. It consists of 16 sub-forums and 4 thematic forums. Topics include international cooperation and global governance, human civilization and modernization paths, regions and countries. Research, population aging and sustainable development, knowledge inheritance and mutual learning among civilizations and other fields. Experts and scholars from China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and other countries communicated closely in keynote reports and sub-forums on the 3rd to share cooperation results and insights.

“The destinies of all countries in the world are connected, and common development is the only way to go. Different civilizations can learn from each other’s strengths through exchanges and mutual learning, and work together while seeking common ground while reserving differences. Only then can we pool the strengths of all countries to resolve global problems and inject new impetus into world peace and development.” Gong, President of Peking University Qi Huang said at the opening ceremony of the forum.
Irina Bokova, former Director-General of UNESCO, said that today the world is facing increasingly frequent and complex challenges, such as climate change, geopolitical conflicts, etc., and no country can remain immune. The international community must take action as soon as possible to bring sustainable development back on track.
She said that China has become an indispensable and important country on the world stage, is committed to solving global challenges, and its experience in sustainable development is worth learning from. The global civilization initiative proposed by China is far-sighted, conducive to exchanges and mutual learning among different civilizations, and provides good solutions to cope with common challenges of mankind and build a more harmonious world.
Choi Tae-won, global chairman of South Korea’s SK Group, said that in an era of change, different countries, cultures and disciplines must strengthen exchanges and cooperation and promote scientific and technological innovation in order to cope with global challenges such as natural disasters and environmental pollution. “The Beijing Forum has set up a good platform for cross-cultural exchanges and brought together scholars from around the world to propose innovative solutions to global challenges.”
Gong Qihuang said that over the past 20 years, the Beijing Forum has become an important link for scholars from various countries to gather ideas. “I sincerely hope that everyone will continue to use this important platform to carry out in-depth exchanges and discussions, light up the beacon of civilization, solve global development problems, and contribute the light of wisdom to promote human development and progress.”
