The movie “Rooftop Football” directed by Feiyu is now being released nationwide. Different from other sports-themed movies, this film not only tells the story of a pair of young sisters who have dreams of training hard to finally realize their dream of an international competition, but also focuses on their longing for their parents who are working outside the country. In an exclusive interview with reporters, director Feiyu said: “The emotional bond between parents and children is the core of the film’s performance.”

In Bingzhongluo Town, Gongshan County, Yunnan, the Nu River Grand Canyon flows through it. Feiyu met a teenage girl while collecting stories. At that time, she was taking her younger sister and younger brother with her, as well as a big yellow dog. Feiyu wanted to take pictures of her house, so the little girl took him home and introduced her daily life. Feiyu found inspiration from this interview and wrote the little sisters and the big yellow dog into the script. The sister Ayiduo played by Tan Xinyu and the sister Ayimei played by Tang Liangfeng became the two sisters in the film. The big yellow dog was changed to a black dog in the film.

On another trip to Baoshan Stone Town in Yunnan, Feiyu saw a complex of buildings built by the Naxi ethnic group on a big stone on the top of a mountain. Children in the village were competing to kick walnuts to see who could kick them far, and Feiyu also joined in. What impressed him most during this interview was the “Tuanhuashu Primary School” he saw in the village. Feiyu discovered that almost all the young and middle-aged people in the village had gone out to work, and the rest were the elderly and children. In the ancient village, the only trace of life and vitality were these children who grew wildly like flower trees. His heart was touched, and the plot of “Rooftop Football” became clear in his mind.

In order to find a suitable shooting location, Feiyu and the team visited many places.

In the Luxi area of the Red River, Feiyu discovered a very dilapidated village. Most of the houses were uninhabited. Feiyu and his team spent a lot of effort to renovate and strengthen the houses, and finally transformed them into what they looked like in the film, ” Playing football on the roof can convey the wild things in children,” Feiyu said.

Finding suitable young actors was not easy. Feiyu and his team visited more than 200 schools in Yunnan and met more than 10,000 children, and finally selected 20 to play roles in the film.

In the film, Ayimi has a very motivated heart at a young age. She dreams of forming a team and immediately puts it into action. If you can’t get enough team members, you’ll hug your sister’s thigh and act coquettishly and ask for help; if there’s no unified team uniform, then you’ll use the skills of sewing clothes for your dog to make your own; if you’re not favored by others, you’ll train harder and try to win the game to prove your strength. .

The motivation behind all this stems from her missing her mother. Her mother’s words, “I want to see Ayime smile on the court” became the fire that was buried in her heart. Hard work paid off, and the sisters finally got better and better at playing. The last highlight of the film was the Sino-Japanese youth football match. Feiyu said that he originally wanted to adopt an open ending to leave more room for the audience to think, but later, taking into account the “family fun” characteristics of the film, it ended with the sisters helping the team win the game.

However, at the end of the film, Feiyu still devised a plan to get the sisters back to the village, and they happily played football again. In Feiyu’s view, winning or losing is not the focus of the film. “The focus is to let the children have more love for life and life after experiencing these things.” (Wang Jinyue)
