The hot and exciting ballroom dance often appears in the arena, but rarely appears in the theater in the form of a dance drama to tell a complete story. On April 21st and 22nd, the original national standard dance drama “April in the World” launched by Beijing Dance Academy was performed at the dance theater of Beijing Dance Academy. It rarely used modern dance, Latin dance and other national standard dance vocabulary to present the legendary story of the talented girl Lin Huiyin’s life. on stage.

Modern dance can better express Lin Huiyin’s temperament

“April in the World” is produced by the Art Practice Center of Beijing Dance Academy and created by the International Standard Dance Department of the Foreign Dance Party Branch. The dance drama begins with 16-year-old Lin Huiyin going to Europe to study. The dancers, wearing crisp suits and beautiful dresses, danced fashionable dance steps, bringing the audience into Lin Huiyin’s world.

The story of the play runs through Lin Huiyin’s life, including her love story with Xu Zhimo and Liang Sicheng, her contribution to the protection of ancient Chinese buildings, and her experience in participating in the design of the national emblem and the Monument to the People’s Heroes with faith. Ballroom dance is divided into two categories: Latin dance and modern dance. When Liang Qun, one of the chief directors of the play and a famous choreographer, chose an actor to play Lin Huiyin, he chose a student in the modern dance direction. “The temperament of Latin dance is more Western and sexy, while Lin Huiyin’s temperament is that of a Jiangnan woman, with a delicate appearance and a bold heart. The overall image should be expressed by modern dance.” Liang Qun said.

In the play, the romantic elegance of ballroom dance is brought to the extreme. In “The Soft Waves of the River Kang”, Lin Huiyin and Xu Zhimo danced with endless affection and regrets about being destined to be together; the “wedding” between Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng was the most romantic scene in the whole play. Lin Huiyin and Xu Zhimo, who were wearing white wedding dresses, Liang Sicheng in a tuxedo dances in various styles, swaying and tilting with the music, which makes people intoxicated; and in the chapter showing Lin Huiyin’s dating life, modern young people wearing cheongsams, suits, and plaid shirts interact with the slightly jazzy music, jumping out of the whole play The most enjoyable group dance ever.

Dance imagery interprets mortise and tenon structure

The reason why he chose Lin Huiyin as the subject of the national standard dance drama is because Liang Qun saw the unique temperament of both East and West in this rare talented woman.

“I saw the wedding photos of Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng in Ottawa. One of them was wearing a wedding dress and the other was wearing a tuxedo. Isn’t this what ballroom dancing looks like?” Liang Qun said that many young people at the same time as Lin Huiyin had the experience of studying abroad. Influenced by Western culture, he can speak English and French and wears a suit. “Lin Huiyin is studying ancient architecture and has a very oriental philosophy. I am a Chinese dancer and have also done ballroom dance works. I think I can do it.” This subject matter.”

When expressing the plot of Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng protecting and studying ancient buildings, Liang Qun used imagery-based dance sequences to present the performance. “The mortise and tenon structure of ancient Chinese architecture is consistent with each other. This is exactly the relationship between male and female partners in Latin dance.” Liang Qun used dance movements to imitate the mortise and tenon structure, integrating the charm of Tai Chi in Chinese dance, and constructing a Latin dance. Through the changes in queues and formations, a dance section that combines Chinese and Western styles to create a “school society, mortise and tenon joint” is created.

In addition, Liang Qun also provided guqin music for the ballroom dance. The dance that expresses the mortise and tenon structure is to dance to the melody of the guqin, forming a unique aesthetic style. During the Anti-Japanese War, when Lin Huiyin took refuge in the farmhouse in Lizhuang, Sichuan to compose “History of Chinese Architecture”, and when she guided Chang Shana and other students to design the national gift “Cloisonne Peace Dove Plate”, the tinkling guqin sounded from time to time, making “The Human World” “April” has a lot more Chinese charm.

Ballroom dancer turns to actor because of drama

The actors who appear in the play are all students from the 2021 and 2022 classes of the National Ballroom Dance Department of Beijing Dance Academy. Many of them have won awards in the field of sports dance in China, but dancers in national standard dance almost only participate in competitive competitions, and very few When participating in a repertoire, you have to dance with a fixed dance partner all year round. There is no concept of “entering the role” and “acting opposite”, which has become a major difficulty in creating and repertoire.

Backstage before the performance, Lin Huiyin’s actor Yang Xinyi, a 2021 student at the Beijing Dance Academy, hung photos and portraits of Lin Huiyin from different eras in front of the makeup mirror. Yang Xinyi relived Lin Huiyin’s life in her heart. “It was really difficult to get into the state of acting as a character at the beginning. For example, Lin Huiyin went to Europe to study. We were very skilled in that dance, but I had to learn to imagine myself as her and show a very novel and excited look.” She said. Recalling that in the early stages of rehearsals, Liang Qun took her to watch operas, dance dramas, and even acrobatics. It took her a year to make her realize from her heart that she was no longer a contestant on the field, nor was she anyone’s dance partner. , but Lin Huiyin, the character in the play.

After the performance of “April in the World”, Liang Qun looked at Yang Xinyi on the stage and felt that she had finally “enlightened”. “Every ballroom dance competition must be the same and cannot change, but the stage performances are different. When meeting the audience, the actor’s state will be very different.” Liang Qun was very pleased, “She has now taken the first step. A competitive modern dancer joined the cast. “Speaking of the on-campus performance of “April in the World”, Liang Qun gave himself an 80-point score, “Judging from the audience’s reaction, everyone expressed their enthusiasm for the creation of the national standard dance drama. Their attempts are still acceptable, and the exploration of Chinese and Western integration does not make them feel inconsistent.”

The play will be officially performed at Tianqiao Art Center from May 9th to 11th.
