A very good tragicomedy

“Yongdingmenli” embodies the efforts and emotions of several presidents of Beijing People’s Art Theatre. Screenwriter Jinyun is Liu Jinyun, the second dean of Renyi and a famous playwright. “Yongdingmenli” is his creative work for more than ten years following his masterpieces such as “The Nirvana of the Dog Master”, “Boundless Love” and “Ruan Lingyu”. In “The Gate of Yongding”, Liu Jinyun uses his powerful writing skills to run through the changes of the times from the 1950s to the 1980s. Focusing on the two male protagonists Xiao Dali and Feng Jingbo who have embarked on different paths, he unfolds a 30-year competition and struggle between them. Competition, perseverance and transformation demonstrate the power of faith and humanity.

“Yongdingmenli” was planned during the period of Zhang Heping, the third president of Renyi. Director Ren Ming, who was a member of the Arts Committee at the time and later became the fourth dean of the People’s Arts, wrote his “After Reading”: “This is a very beautiful tragicomedy, with strong drama appreciation, and it is a pretty good script. It’s very story-telling and captivating. The lines are well-written, the characters have character, and they have a sense of humor. The characters’ inner worlds are also rich and multi-faceted.”

In 2022, Ren Ming passed away suddenly, and Feng Yuanzheng took over as the dean. “When considering the future development of the theater, there are several classic plays there, and we first chose “The Red Flag”.” Feng Yuanzheng said. To this end, the crew specially arranged a lot of desk work, invited experts to give lectures, and organized actors to visit archives to review materials and watch documentaries. Through a large amount of background accumulation, they explored the spiritual outlook of people in the past era, and then created vivid and credible characters. .
